One thing that is always so satisfying for fashion enthusiasts is lying on the couch and flipping through the pages of a fashion magazine! I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about. Vogue, Elle, Harper Bazaar and … So I’m going to list some of the well-known ones and write about them a bit. This list is to be continued..
1.Vogue
People don’t say what is in fashion anymore, they ask what is in vogue !
The word Vogue means style in french.Vogue is undoubtedly the most influential fashion magazine in the world. It started its work as a weekly newspaper in 1892 and slowly moved forward and became a monthly magazine .It is published by Conde Nast and Anna Wintour, a British-American journalist is its editor-in-chief who attempted to bring a new life to the magazine and is also known as the most powerful woman in media & entertainment , according to Forbes.
One of the reasons of their success is that they work with the best people in the international industries, whether they are stylists, photographers, hair or make-up artists or set designers. Today, there are 26 international editions for vogue. Having a vogue cover is every celebrity’s wish and the record of most vogue covers currently belongs to Lauren Hutton with 40 covers!

- The first photographic vogue model was a spy! Toto Koopman was an Indonesian dutch model, interesting to know that her and Coco Chanel were friends and even worked together but afterwards, during the WWII , Koopman became a spy but captured later on by the Nazis. The book Toto and Coco tells the parallel wartime stories of these two fashion plates and the different paths they took.
- Anna Wintour had to fight to keep Naomi Campbell on the cover. Naomi was the first black woman in the American vogue.
- Kim Kardashian and Kanye West April 2014 is the bestseller so far.
- Vogue’s largest issue was the September 2012 one , included 916 pages and weighed 4.5 pound!
2. ELLE
Elle is a french fashion magazine, introducing global ideas and trends in fashion and lifestyle. It also provides special articles about beauty, fitness, health and entertainment. The word ‘Elle‘ means ‘she‘ or ‘her‘ in french. This magazine started its work in 1945 , found by Pierce Lazareff and his wife.
Its current editor-in-chief is Nina Garcia, a Colombian-American fashion journalist. Elle is now published in 44 countries . You can check out its Youtube channel in order to find cool interviews and associations with special artists and celebrities.
3. Harper’s Bazaar
Harper’s Bazaar is another top-rated fashion magazine for women. It was first published in New York city in 1867 and now. after over 150 years of circulation , it still brings you the latest trends from admired designers and tips from beauty experts.
Harper’s Bazaar was one of the first publications dedicated to looking at women’s lives through the lens of fashion. It can be used as a style resource from casual to couture for all women. Samira Nasr is its editor-in-chief and in fact, is the first black editor to hold the top title at the magazine.
4. Essence
Essence magazine is a publication for African-American women of all shapes, ages and etc. It began its work in May 1970 and was called a lifestyle magazine directed to upscale African-American women.
Edward Lewis and Clarence O.smith recognized black women were overlooked and saw Essence as a chance to capitalize the virtually untouched market of black readers. Susan L.Taylor is the editor-in-chief. So if you are interested in knowing about this black community more, this magazine is an amazing choice!
5. Allure
Allure is another American monthly magazine for women, published by Conde Nast . The word allure means the power of attraction. This magazine publishes articles about beauty, skin, hair and etc. It was first published in 1991 and its editor in chief is Michelle Lee.
It is good to know that allure was the first women’s magazine to write about the health risks associated with silicone breast implants and also reported on other related issues.
6. Vanity fair
Vanity fair is a monthly American magazine, again published by Conde Nast which is about culture, fashion, politics and etc. It was first published in 1983 and its editor in chief is Radhika Jones.
7.Glamour
Glamour is an online American woman’s magazine which is also published by Conde Nast.A couple years ago Conde Nast announced that this magazine will no longer produce a printed version. It was first published in 1939 and its editor in chief is Samantha Barry.
